Blogging Options: CBOE Mid-day Update

Volatility as an asset class:

Apple (AAPL) is recently up $4.85 $585.20 after announcing today at its Annual Worldwide Developers Conference Apple that customers have downloaded 30B apps. Overall option implied volatility of 33 is near its 26-week average of 32.

Omnicare (OCR) is recently down $2.39 to $30.99 after the company’s CEO John Figueroa resigned, though the company said its financial guidance for the current year was unaffected by the resignation. July and September put option implied volatility of 42 is above its 26-week average of 35.
 
Centene (CNC) is recently down $8.89 to $26.56 after lowering its 2012 earnings guidance due to higher medical costs at several of its subsidiaries. July put option implied volatility is at 68, September is at 61; above its 26-week average of 44.
 
U.S. equities mixed to lower as hopes fade the bailout of Spain’s banks will reduce the euro debt crisis.
 
CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) is recently up 51c to 21.74. June 22, 28 and 32 calls are active on total option volume of 360K contacts at the CBOE.
