Blogging Options: CBOE Afternoon Update

Volatility as an asset class:
 

PetsSmart’s (PETM) is up $2.83 to $70.27 on better than expected Q2 profits and earnings expectations for the year. September put option implied volatility is at 27, October is at 25, compared to its 26-week average of 29.
 
Sears Holdings Corp (SHLD) is up $2.88 to $59.48 on a less than expected Q2 loss after cost cutting measures. September put option implied volatility is at 55, December is at 67; compared to its 26-week average of 62.
 
Agilent Technologies (A) is down $3.66 to $36.88 on Q3 profit decreasing 26% as the testing and measurement equipment manufacturer reported larger than expected expenses that lead to weak margins.
September put option implied volatility is at 29, November is at 33; below its 26-week average of 36.

Facebook (FB) is off $1.10 to $20.09, after trading as low as $19.69. Stock volume is active with ~ 127 million shares changing hands. Mid-day FB had traded 383k options contracts, roughly 20k of those were weeklys. August implied volatility in FB was ~73%

S&P 100 Options (OEX) is up 0.6% to 650.04. DJIA higher by 100 points, SPX up 11 points. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) is down 1.3% to 14.44.
