Blogging Options: CBOE Morning Update

Volatility as an asset class:
 
Ulta Salon (ULTA) is up $8.44 to $103.70 in the premarket after reporting strong Q2 results and adding Clinique boutiques. Overall option implied volatility of 52 is above its 26-week average of 40.

Intel (INTC) is down 67c to $24.42 in the after cutting its Q3 revenue outlook and guidance. Overall option implied volatility of 25 is near its 26-week average.

Cooper Cos.’s (COO) is up $6.02 to $92.05 in the premarket following Q3 earnings rising 51%. Overall option implied volatility of 33 is above its 26-week average of 30.

CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) closed at 15.60. VIX closed above its 10-day moving average of 16.76 and its 50-day MA of 16.74.

Headline Unemployment Rate drops to 8.1% from 8.3%. The more important number is 96k jobs added in Aug, well below 135k expected. So was jump in ADP# yesterday a headfake? U.S. stocks are mixed to higher on this report. Asian stocks closed up, European stocks paring gains but still up.
