Gerard Pannekoek is the President and CEO of the Intellectual Property Exchange International (IPXI). His presentation was titled Trading Innovation: A Financial Exchange for Intellectual Property Rights which was a discussion of the emergence of intellectual property (IP) as an asset class.
Some of the interesting statistics about IP as an asset class –
The US value of intellectual capital is valued at $9.2 trillion.
Annually more than $1 trillion is invested in the US for the creation of intangible assets.
81% of the value of the S&P 500 market value is attributed to intangible assets. This is up from 17% in 1975.
The private intellectual property license industry is estimated to be $500 billion in the US – that means only 5% of this asset has been monetized.
He noted issues in the current IP market that are addressed through the IPXI Exchange such as incomplete market information, arbitrary determination of IP value, lack of standard pricing parameters, and time and transaction cost inefficiencies.
