Volatility as an asset class

Health Management (HMA) is recently down $2.10 to $10.49 after the hospital company missed earnings expectations for its Q1 and lowered the range of guidance for fiscal year 2013. April put option implied volatility is at 45, May and August is at 42; compared to its 26-week average of 41.

Yahoo (YHOO) is recently up 43c to $20.46 after the WSJ says the company is talking with Apple (AAPL) about potential for expanded mobile partnership. April call option implied volatility is at 34, May is at 28, June is at 26; compared to its 26-week average of 28.

Baidu (BIDU) is recently up $5.55 to $90.45 after the Chinese internet portal was upgraded to Buy from Hold at 86 Research. April call option implied volatility is at 41,May is at 42, June is at 44; compared to its 26-week average of 41

CBOE S&P 500 2% OTM BuyWrite Index (BXY) is recently up 10.85 to 1292,10 above its 10-day moving average of 1276.97 and its 50-day moving average of 1249.97.


CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) is recently down 31c to 12.53. VIX April 14 calls and April 15 calls are active on total option volume of 426K contacts at the CBOE.

S&P 100 Options (OEX) is recently up 8.64 to $714.62 as the S&P 500 (SPY) climbed to a new all-time intraday record as investors purchased technology and financial shares that have lagged gains in other sectors recently.
