Volatility as an asset class

Costco (COST) is recently down $2.95 to $116.39 after reporting July SSS rose 4%. August call option implied volatility is at 16, September is at 15, October is at 16, January is at 15; compared to its 26-week average of 17.

McDonalds (MCDP is recently down 44c to $97.90 after reporting July U.S. comparable sales rose 1.6%; Reports July Europe comparable sales down 1.9%, Asia/Pacific, middle East and Africa comparable sales decreased 1.9%.  Overall option implied volatility of 14 is near its 26-week average of 15.

Fusion-io (FIO) is recently down $3.25 to $11.65 after the data-storage company reported weaker than expected guidance, accelerating competition, a conflict with OEMs, and decline in Flash purchase obligations. September call option implied volatility is at 50, December is at 53; compared to its 26-week average of 58.

CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) is recently down 10c to 12.88. VIX August 18 and September 17 and 25 calls are active on total option volume of 276K contacts at the CBOE.

S&P 100 Options (OEX) is recently down 40c to $757.46 as bond prices increase.
