Volatility as an asset class

Microsoft (MSFT) is up $0.47 to $38.60, a new 52-week high on strong Xbox sales.  December weekly call option implied volatility is at 26, December is at 23, January and February is at 24; compare to its 26-week average of 23.

Petrobras (PBR) is down $1.83 to $14.12 after announcing a new diesel and gasoline pricing policy. December call option implied volatility is at 47, December is at 48, January is at 35, April is at 37; compared to its 26-week average of 37.

eBay (EBAY) is up $1.12 to $51.65 after a research firm reported that the company’s e-commerce sales had surged last Friday and Saturday.   December weekly call option implied volatility is at 33, December is at 26, January is at 30, February and April at 28; compared to its 26-week average of 31.

CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) is recently up 9c to 13.79. VIX December 14 calls are active on 8K contracts and 14 puts on 17K at CBOE.

iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures (VXX) are recently down 9c to 45.30.

S&P 100 Options (OEX) erased early gains and was off $0.20 to $806.16 after The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) said factory activity was at a 30-month high.
