Volatility as an asset class

Carmax (KMX) is recently down $4.58 to $48.47 after reporting solid Q3 results and concerns on tightening subprime credit terms. January call option implied volatility is at 23, April and July is at 25; compared to its 26-week average of 28.

Walgreen (WAG) is recently up $1.35 to $58.28 after announcing a Q1 profit increase of 68%.  January, April and July call option implied volatility is at 21; below its 26-week average of 24.

BlackBerry (BBRY) is recently up 75c to $7 after CEO John Chen highlighted the company’s enterprise security and cost reductions after Q3 revenue missed expectations. January call option implied volatility is at 54, February is at 57, March and June is at 54; compared to its 26-week average of 63.

CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) is recently down 85c to 13.31. VIX January 17, 20 calls and 14 puts are active on 256K contracts at CBOE.

iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures (VXX) are recently down 5c to 44.28.

S&P 100 Options (OEX) is recently up $5.12 to $812.06 as cash on the sidelines moves into stocks after the Fed tapper decision this week.
