Blogging Options: CBOE Mid-Day Update 1.3.13

Option volume on the average side today, as weather in NY sending some traders home early.~10 million options trade at mid-day.
Volatility as an asset class

Herbalife (HLF) is down $2.69 to $77.14 and Nu Skin (NUS) down $5.00 to $133.43 on the Federal Trade Commission announcing it will hold a press conference on January 7 to announce an initiative against “deceptive advertising of weight-loss products,” without naming the products or manufacturers. HLF January 1/10/14 put option implied volatility is at 67, January is at 60, February is at 62, May is at 65; compared to its 26-week average of 54.

Nu Skin January put option implied volatility is at 49, February is at 52, March is at 50; compared to its 26-week average of 46 according to Track Data. Active put volume suggests traders taking large price movement.

iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures (VXX) are up 1c to 43.45.

S&P 100 Options (OEX) is down 0.42 to $816.63 on mixed December auto vehicle sales.
