Pretty good option volume at the mid-day mark, as CBOE trades ~3.1mm of 11mm options contracts traded. SPX with 420k traded and VIX showing 490k changing hands.
Volatility as an asset class

Brinker (EAT) is up $2.38 to $48.97 after the casual restaurant chain reported better than expected Q2 results. February and March call option implied volatility is at 21, July is at 25; compared to its 26-week average of 28.

Motorola Solutions (MSI) is down $2.42 to $64.69 after lowering its Q1 EPS view to 46c to 52c versus consensus of 77 cents. February and March call option implied volatility is at 15, July is at 17; compared to its 26-week average of 22.

Apple (AAPL) is up $4.66 to $553.88 after Carl Icahn raised his position to over $3B. AAPL is expected to release Q1 results on January 27.  AAPL 1/31/14 call option implied volatility is at 42, February is at 32; March is at 28; above its 26-week average of 28.
