Blogging Options: CBOE morning Update 7.18.14

Big option day yesterday with CBOE doing ~ 7mm of 24 mm options traded. VIX traded 1.149 mm contracts and SPX with 1.141 mm.  383k VIX Futures traded.  10k VIX Futures traded in the first hour of the evening session last night.

Futures pretty flat going into the opening.  European stocks lower. GE with a slight beat on earnings. Expiration Fiday.  Volatility as an asset class:

Google (GOOGL) is up $19.44 to $600.26 in the premarket after reporting Q2 EPS $6.08, compared to consensus $6.24. July call option implied volatility is at 77, August is at 27, September is at 22; compared to its 26-week average of 22.

IBM (IBM) is down $2.07 to $190.42 after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS $4.32, consensus $4.29. July weekly call option implied volatility is at 39, August is at 22, October is at 17, January is at 18; above its 26-week average of 18.

athenahealth (ATHN) is up 22c to $128 in the premarket after the provider of cloud based services for electronic health record practice management and care coordination reported better than expected Q2 results. July weekly call option implied volatility of 91, August is at 51, September is at 47, December is 48; compared to its near its 26-week average of 49.

SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) is up 54c to $196.29 the day after Israel soldiers and tanks entered Gaza and the downing of Malaysian Airline’s flight MH17.
