The Weekly Options News Roundup – 7/10/2015

The Weekly News Roundup is your weekly recap of CBOE features, options industry news and VIX and volatility-related articles from print, broadcast and online and social media outlets.

Back to the Futures
A pioneer of the short-term options known as Weeklys, CBOE successfully bridged the gap between monthly expirations with these event-driven contracts. Now CBOE is expanding the concept to include its proprietary VIX futures contracts, adding Weeklys futures on July 23rd.  The launch will be followed by the addition of VIX Weeklys options, pending regulatory approval.  For more information visit

Extended Hours Trading Record
Markets in China went haywire this week, halting trading in hundreds of securities. Following the events in Chinese equity markets, U.S. investors used the VIX during non-U.S. trading hours, causing VIX volume in extended trading hours to reach a new high, trading 8,848 contracts during the 2 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. session on Wednesday, July 8.

What’s the Volatility 411?
What a week, what a week.  It seems as if elements of global macro events came together, creating the perfect storm for increased volatility.  The threat of a Greek implosion, a crash in the Chinese stock market, and concerns about cyber security breaches sent the VIX soaring to the mid-19 levels, but it has since receded.  Will this volatile trend continue, or will a summer lull set in?
